Burghard Baltrusch

BURGHARD BALTRUSCH is a scholar of Hispanophone and Lusophone Studies whose research focuses on Fernando Pessoa, José Saramago, contemporary poetry, and translation theory.

Burghard holds the International José Saramago Chair at the University of Vigo, where he also coordinates BiFeGa, the main humanities research group at UVigo, and the Interuniversity Doctoral Program in Literary Studies. As a collaborating researcher, Burghard contributes to the Instituto de Literatura Comparada Margarida Losa at the University of Porto and the Interuniversity Centre for Research on Atlantic Landscapes and Cultures, which encompasses all three Galician universities.

Burghard has authored and edited numerous articles, books, and other publications in the fields of Galician literature, Portuguese literature, literary theory, translation studies, and poetry studies. He is also a translator of contemporary Portuguese and Galician poetry into German. Since 2012, he has served as editor-in-chief of the Studies in Ibero-Romance Literature and Translatology series, published by Frank & Timme.

In 2019, Burghard established the Jangada Network, dedicated to the thought and work of José Saramago. The network encompasses the 9 José Saramago chairs that exist worldwide as well as various other institutions, among them the Paris Institute for Critical Thinking (PICT).
