Chess Atelier (Children)

Instructor: Stephan Schweitzer

One of the oldest games in the world, chess has lost none of its excitement, relevance, and popularity in the 21st century. But did you know that chess can also be a valuable tool in the development of children?

Children gravitate quickly to chess, provided they receive a motivating introduction. They seize the challenge to apply the rules of the game in creative ways and can instantly observe the outcome of their ideas on the board. Engaged in exciting gameplay, they develop skills of logic, calculation, abstract thinking, and key variable identification in an intuitive way. Chess teaches them to weigh the long-term consequences of their actions, and, perhaps most importantly, to be patient. And as children cultivate these key skills, it becomes considerably easier for them to express themselves, communicate and engage others on an intellectual level.

This course introduces children to chess in an age-appropriate way. They discover the history of the game and the evolution of its critical theory, explore the global cultures that have shaped the game’s development, and engage with the modern practice of chess through the example of major grandmasters. Testing their skills as players in a comfortable yet competitive environment, they come to care about what they learn, and develop their competences voluntarily rather than through drills, as seems to happen so often in education. Combining fun, focus, and depth, chess can be a great companion while growing up!
