Forging the Axe: Fiction Workshop
Instructor: Anna Polonyi
“If the book we’re reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow to head, what are we reading for?… A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.”
This is a hands-on course for writing fiction, meant to equip you with a set of craft techniques and skills that will help you grow as a writer and editor of your own work. We’ll look at how to bring characters alive, set vivid scenes, handle tension and dialogue, and pull of satisfying, surprising endings. Modeled on the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, each session is made up of a short craft lesson, close reading, writing prompts, and a workshop that will provide honest, constructive, and detailed feedback on a student’s submitted work.
This course is ideal for writers seeking feedback on an existing piece of work, but also for writers looking for deadlines and motivation. Though it is specifically focused on fictional storytelling, creative non-fiction writers are welcome to attend.
