Makeup Through the Decades

A 2-day Workshop designed by New York make-up artists for Paris Fashion Week!
Instructors: Jessica Padilla, Michelle Coursey

In tandem with Paris Fashion Week 2018, this special workshop offers an applied expedition into the history of makeup. The workshop spans from the Jazz Age to the Golden Age of Hollywood, outlining the socio-economic changes that produced major makeup trends from the 1920s to the 1950s. At the same time, our instructors demonstrate how to create historically accurate makeup styles with the right products, colors, and placements, explaining the necessary references for recreating the style of each period. Whether you are a makeup artist, makeup lover, or stylish history buff, this class has something for everyone.

Day 1:

Makeup became de rigueur for women of all classes in the 1920s and 1930s. In this session, we will discuss and demonstrate the trends and formulas that were developed in those seminal decades of makeup. While the beauty industry has survived many economic tides since then, these classic styles still inform the looks we know today. How and why did we come to rely so heavily on the power of cosmetics and the dream that it promises? Here, we will trace this question back to the roots of modern makeup.

Day 2:

In the 1940s and 1950s, women gained increasing cultural and economic independence. The same decades witnessed a focus on glamour and sexuality in advertising. The Golden Age of Hollywood introduced iconic faces and a new beauty ideal for women to emulate. Simple makeup components such as applying lipstick acquired potent social meanings, such as lifting the morale of fighting soldiers or encouraging women on their first day of work. In this session, we will demonstrate the styles of these decades while exploring their shifting social dynamics.
