Somewhere, Something: A Workshop on Place

0.00

Instructor: Samuel Leader

As writers, we are often prone to forgetting the where for the what. But as Elizabeth Bowen reminds us, “Nothing can happen nowhere. The locale of the happening always colours the happening, and often, to a degree, shapes it.” In this informal, 1.5-hour workshop, we will explore ideas of place in fiction as well as narrative non-fiction. Drawing on selected short texts with a particularly vivid or unusual approach to place, we will consider how stories are not just about something, how the somewhere can become the story, and how the writing itself can become a place for the reader. We will then round off the workshop with a short exercise to generate ideas for stories where our writing is driven and enriched by a powerful and complex sense of place.
