Political Writing for the Stage
A one-day intensive workshop by the PICT Creative Writing School!
Instructor: Anton Bonnici
Many are motivated to use theatre to raise awareness of socio-political realities, to sway opinions, or even to bring about behavioral change. But in order to achieve such aims, we must go beyond the usual storytelling techniques and enter the world of political theatre. In this one-day intensive workshop, we will acquaint ourselves with key 20th-century ideas on writing with a political agenda while, at the same time, applying practical techniques to specific dramatic scenes. Throughout, our goal will be to create dramatic pieces that realize the full potential for impact and change that theatre has to offer. The workshop is open to novice and seasoned writers alike—no previous experience is required!
While the workshop can be taken on its own, we highly recommend combining it with its companion piece, Bertolt Brecht and Beyond, a PICT Humanities & Arts course that is free for all PICT Members. Both offerings are designed and led by theatre maker Anton Bonnici, artistic director of the Paris Fringe International Festival of Performing Arts.
